Summary

China-born Ester Benjamin Shifren will speak on the history of her family, as the descendent of five generations of British Jewish nationals who lived in Shanghai for more than one century. Dr. Lawrence Baron will moderate.

Description

The San Diego Chinese Historical Museum is partnering with the SDSU Chinese Cultural Center to bring twice-monthly remote educational programming to our community via this series of talks and discussions.  This series offers unique insights into Chinese history, Chinese culture, American history and lifeways of Chinese Americans, with a particular focus on objects represented in the Museum’s permanent collection. 

On May 1, we will welcome Ester Benjamin Shifren, the descendent of five generations of British Jewish nationals who lived in Shanghai for more than one century.  She and her family were interned for three years by the Japanese during World War II. She has lectured extensively internationally about her life experiences. This presentation about her life, moderated by Dr. Lawrence Baron, promises to be fascinating.
