Summary

David Miles speaks on Chinese Northern and Southern Painting

Description

The San Diego Chinese Historical Museum is partnering with the SDSU Chinese Cultural Center to bring twice-monthly remote educational programming to our community via this series of talks and discussions.  This series offers unique insights into Chinese history, Chinese culture, American history and lifeways of Chinese Americans, with a particular focus on objects represented in the Museum’s permanent collection

On August 21st, David Miles will present a lecture on Chinese landscape paintings, refering to the teachings of Ming Dynasty painter, Dong Qichang (1555 - 1636 CE), who categorized them in relation to the Northern School or the Southern School.  This talk, which will be moderated by Dr. Bob Stein, will provide examples of paintings from major artists, and we shall decide who belongs to which school.

David Miles’ interest in art began as a teenager when he lived in Singapore with his family. Majoring in Chemistry at the University of Virginia, he chose literature and art history as elective courses. And art hanging in study spaces reinforced his decision to accept a postdoc at The Scripps Research Institute. After a career in biotech, he turned to volunteer work, including service with social justice organizations. In 2015, he entered the docent program at the San Diego Museum of Art. He lives in North Park with his husband of more than 30 years and their three dogs.

Bob Stein (M.D., Thomas Jefferson University Jefferson Medical College) is an experienced museum docent, who graduated from the SDMA Docent Training Program in 2016.  He retired from a career as a cardiologist and staff member at Palomar Hospital, where he served in many different leadership roles, including Chairman of the Department of Medicine, Medical Director of Cardiac Services, and Chief of Staff.  He joined the SDCHM as a member of our Board of Directors in 2020, and is a member of our Education Outreach team.
