Description
The San Diego Chinese Historical Museum is partnering with the SDSU Chinese Cultural Center to bring monthly remote educational programming to our community via this series of talks and discussions. This series offers unique insights into Chinese history, Chinese culture, American history and lifeways of Chinese Americans, with a particular focus on objects represented in the Museum’s permanent collection.
On August 20th, 2022, we will be joined by Allie Arnell, who will give a presentation on symbolism in Chinese art. Allie holds a Juris Doctorate from the University Virginia School of Law. She is an artist and an art history instructor at a small college in San Diego. For the last 10 years she has been associated with the docent program at the San Diego Museum of Art. She specializes in the Art of East and South Asia and has given many lectures regarding the art and material culture of these regions.
A preview of the content of Allie's presentation follows: Most of us are aware that Dragons and Phoenix were important symbols in the culture of China. But Chinese art was filled with important symbols that would have had and often still have deep meaning for the people of China. We will explore the varied expressions of the dragon, the phoenix and other symbols in many types of art from China. Additionally, we will contemplate their meaning in different moments of the long history of China.
