The Art of Chunming Yu and Wang Lan

This exhibition features paintings and prints from two Chinese artists: Chunming Yu and Wang Lan.

Professor Yu was born in China in 1955 and has lived in the United States since 1996.  Trained in the traditional art forms of his home country, Yu is also greatly influenced by traditions of the West.  His paintings are a fusion of traditional Eastern vantage points coupled with the Western emotional power of light through a layering of chiaroscuro, the interplay of light and dark.  

Homes across China, or “residences” are the subject of Professor Yu’s study.   All across the vast territory of China, situated in its diverse patchwork of natural and geographic conditions, also reflecting the unique production and life characteristics of more than 56 ethnic groups, China’s residential buildings make for a fascinating subject.  From sketches of residential buildings to large-scale oil paintings, many of the works on-display through this exhibition have never been on view before. The exhibition records the painter's mental journey and will be his largest exhibition in the United States. The exhibition will feature early life sketches, oil paintings, and works that demonstrate Yu's transformation as an artist after coming to the United States.

Peking Opera is regarded as the national opera of China. As a child in Hebei province, Wang Lan would bring his paint box with him to the opera house.  The paintings featured in this exhibition illustrate the costumes, makeup, and head decoration of opera characters, the subject of study for the work of Wang Lan.
